Dressing for Cold Weather during my Remote Year while packing light was hard, but here is a blog post that will show you how I managed to find the most useful and classic London Winter Outfits.
This trip was the first of my remote living year (2018) and I learned how to dress for really cold weather.
I went for “layers”. This strategy just happened, I wasn’t a big planner at the moment. I considered it was the best alternative. I found out that I love wearing thighs and dresses. You can wear the dress many times without washing it as it’s not in direct contact with your skin.

First Layers for your London Winter Outfits
My previous trip to a winter destination was to Tokyo. Obviously, I had everything Uniqlo offered me: Thermal thighs, thermal shirts, thermal beanie, thermal socks.
I would wash my thighs and thermal shirts (everything was from Uniqlo, of course) and wear them on repeat. I ruined some thighs with the dryer machine, so be careful with those. They are light (easy to pack) and they provide great heat. I know here in Italy people prefer the “Lana seta from Intimissimi, but I didn’t know about it at that time.
I wore my Uniqlo thighs every day, I just loved them. If it was too cold, I would wear two of them. I got a pair from Marks & Spencer too, and the quality was incredible -I got them in 2018 and I still have them!
Second Layers for your London Winter Outfits
The piece I wore the most was a beautiful denim dress which I still have and wear, of course. It’s from H&M. It’s probably not the best dress for a trip itself as it won’t pass easily through security with all those buttons, but it’s one of my treasures. I wear it from winter to summer and have it in blue as well.
It was important for me that it would look good indoors too, so it was a great option. Sometimes thermal shirts are transparent, but with this denim dress, there was no problem at all. In Manchester, I went thrifting with a new Colombian friend and got a BEAUTIFUL fair isle sweater, 100% wool, grey, beautiful, which I really loved. It was the perfect layer under my coat, ideal for temperatures of -10 degrees in Manchester. I hope to find a similar pullover soon because I left it somewhere in London and that’s a decision I will regret forever. It was reasonable at that moment as it weighed 1 Kilo and I couldn’t carry it with me because my next stop was Australia for 3 months (it was going to be just fall).
Sometimes, I would also wear a black sweater from H&M – I still have it but I don’t recommend it as it was polyester and wasn’t warm at all. I should have bought a 100% wool sweater since the beginning but it was so big and heavy I couldn’t carry it either.
Outerwear
As I mentioned, my next destination was Australia and I was traveling with only one suitcase, so I didn’t have a coat with me. When I visited the Brick Lane Market, I bought this grey coat for 15 pounds, it was from French Connection. The quality was terrible and I also left it behind.
The ultra-light Uniqlo jacket and vest were my favorites too. Super light and warm to wear underneath the coat.
I had a plain black wool scarf that was super warm and of course, wool gloves. I took them off for the photos, my friend (and photographer), Facundo, made me do it haha.
To complete my London Winter Outfits, I would wear Vans sneakers but found a beautiful pair of waterproof Timberland Boots in the kids’ section of a vintage shop in Liverpool which I bought. I really liked the vintage area in that city. The boots were a gem, I had them for many years before I ended up selling them on Vinted last year.
On the same street, I found a vintage shop that was organized according to styles, and it was fantastic! Bohemian Chic was my favorite. This picture became popular on Google Maps, so here is the link if you want to take a look: Cow Liverpool, Vintage Clothing Store.
