I love ice cream, and here is the proof.
I’m that person who always takes a picture of the ice cream before eating it. My camera roll is full of gelato photos -sometimes aesthetic, sometimes… not so much, but that’s part of the charm.
Since I’m living in Italy, I’ve made it my mission to find the best gelaterias around the country.
Italian Gelato
My favorite flavors are Pistacchio, Arachidi (Peanut) and Stracciatella.
If it’s summer and I’m already on my second ice cream of the day (which happens a lot), then I go for watermelon or melon. Or I switch to a Sicilian granita.
My favorite granita flavors are almond (especially in Sicily), pistachio, watermelon and melon.
I’m sharing all this so you can try them and tell me if you agree with my taste. Also, because I genuinely love talking about ice cream. It’s my favorite dessert, but honestly, I could eat it at any time of the day, any day of the year.
My favorite Italian Gelato
In Milan, I love going to Gelateria Orso Bianco close to the Naviglio Grande and M2 Porta Genova. They have the best pistachio I’ve ever tried. Their chocolate flavors are amazing too.
I also enjoy the ice cream from Mister Gel, near Porta Ticinese. The arachidi salato is unreal — salty, creamy, perfect.
When I go to Sicily, I choose Don Peppinu. Their pistachio, almond granita and brioche con gelato are iconic. If you’re in Sicily, it’s a must.
Helado Argentino
When I’m in Argentina, I always go for Helado de Dulce de Leche. If I’m choosing two flavors, I’ll choose two types of dulce de leche. Zero shame.
If I don’t trust the heladería (Grido, for example), then I pick the safest combo: dulce de leche granizado and menta granizada.
Argentinian Helado vs Italian Gelato
Don’t make me choose: both are amazing.
But I will say this: it’s much easier to find consistently high-quality gelato in Italy than it is in my hometown, Córdoba. In Buenos Aires, it’s a different story… There you have incredible places. My favorite is Cadore, a classic when I visit my friend Cami.
What to do when you don’t find good Ice Cream
If I’m in a place where there are no good gelaterias, I go for frozen yogurt or soft serve. You simply can’t go wrong. If everything is closed, like it happens in Amsterdam after 9 PM -even if you have daylight until late, I would get Ben&Jerry’s Cookie Dough.
